CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Two suspects charged with a gas station robbery turned themselves in late Wednesday after police responded at Sunoco on Beltline Road Southwest on Aug. 19—while two other suspects were taken into custody on robbery charges. WAAY-TV
- ➤ Decatur police have arrested 32 suspects over the past month in Operation First Light—targeting individuals with outstanding felony warrants. Decatur Daily
- ➤ Paulette Tennison, the mother of John Scott Jr. who died in Decatur police custody after being arrested in April at Brookridge Apartments, filed a 109-page wrongful death lawsuit on August 29 against Decatur and several law enforcement officials—alleging 30 counts including assault, battery and violations of his federal rights. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Calhoun Community College is opening its new 57,200-square-foot Advanced Technology Center in Tanner to give students hands-on training in fields like aerospace, welding, and advanced machining. The college will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, September 15 at 10:30 a.m.—the facility is set to boost enrollment and meet industry needs. News 19

- ➤ ALDOT began installing traffic camera poles in Limestone and Morgan Counties after a lane closure on I-65 on Sept. 4; contractors will install four 84‑foot concrete poles this week and two per night next week as part of a $2.5 million project to add 11 cameras that help monitor roadway incidents—improving coverage from Priceville to Athens. - ➤ The Decatur City Council voted on Sep 3 to rename a street after Steve Perkins. The council made the change—honoring his years of local service. WAAY-TV
