COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Point Mallard Golf Course will soon receive a $1.5 million upgrade to its irrigation system (approved by local officials) (designed to boost water efficiency) as part of planned improvements.  Decatur Daily
  • Glory Community Church in Decatur is asking the local community for support to build a new sanctuary on property near Priceville—its previous building was destroyed on Jan. 1, 2024 by a faulty wall heater nearly two years ago, and the congregation has worshiped in temporary spaces while planning the demolition of the old building next year.  WAAY-TV
  • Community members recalled the Carrie Matthews Rec Center as a sanctuary and gathering place in northwest Decatur. City council approved $2.5 million for repairs after the center closed in 2019 due to a sinking gym floor — a move meant to honor its legacy — as local voices emphasize its enduring impact.  News 19

  • Alabama Goodwill Industries named Dr. DeWayne Cuffie its new president and CEO as he began his role on September 1, bringing 16 years of Goodwill experience from several cities. He plans to expand workforce development, strengthen partnerships, and grow the organization’s economic engine to boost its impact in Alabama.  News 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Decatur City Schools earned its highest score ever on the state report card—coming half a point short of an A. This record shows the district's strong effort to improve its performance.  Decatur Daily
  • Morgan County Schools earned an A on the Alabama State Department of Education's report card — its first top rating. The results were released last week.  Decatur Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal hemp regulations now set a limit of 0.4 mg THC per container—100 times lower than Alabama’s state law limits—and will override the state legislation 365 days after the spending bill is signed. Retailers must adjust to the stricter federal standard, which may disrupt the hemp business.  Rocket City Now
  • Commissioners voted Tuesday morning to keep popular PBS programs like Sesame Street and Nova on APT as part of a continued partnership with PBS. Commissioner Pete Conroy said the decision—backed by over 1,300 viewer emails—ensures that PBS content, which makes up 90% of APT programming, will remain on air.  News 19
  • TVA's Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant is sending out its annual calendars—with instructions on what to do in a nuclear disaster—to help residents prepare.  Decatur Daily

  • Tuesday's rankings placed the Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 10 (down from No. 4 last week) in the College Football Playoff; projections show that the team will face Oregon in the first playoff round.  WAAY-TV
