COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food City is hosting its 8th annual Friends and Pets in Need Holiday Food Drive from Nov. 5 to Dec. 31 to help local families and animals, where shoppers can buy a $15 (plus tax) bag of non-perishable food or pet food to benefit hunger relief groups and animal shelters. Last year, the drive raised (over $355,000) and Food City hopes to break that record this holiday season.  Rocket City Now
  • Hands Across Decatur is calling for volunteers to extend its service hours due to cold weather, with shifts on Sunday through Tuesday covering tasks such as guest check-in, dinner service, hall monitoring, and cleanup. If enough help is not secured, the group will not extend hours beyond normal times, so interested individuals should text Brad at (1 256 6546371).  News 19
  • Downtown Decatur is upping its festive spirit for Christmas beginning Thursday + local groups are preparing displays and decorations to brighten the streets for the holiday season.  Decatur Daily
  • Local McDonald’s restaurants across the Greater Tennessee Valley will offer a free breakfast combo meal to veterans who show a valid military ID on Tuesday, November 11 — the meal includes a hash brown and a drink to show appreciation for their service.  News 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Decatur City Schools is giving residents aged 65+ a free Silver VIP Card for local school events that do not include playoffs, away games or non-school functions. Interested residents can pick up the card at the Central Office Main Lobby at 212 4th Avenue SE—fill out a short form or print the PDF in advance.  News 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local nurse saved baby Sophia after the one-year-old began seizing during a Home Depot visit last month, quickly performing life-saving measures until paramedics arrived (bringing huge relief to the grateful Shoals family). The parents said the nurse’s prompt action has inspired them to get CPR certified.  WAAY-TV
  • News 19's Ellie Byrd interviewed Tracy Cieniewicz, director of Alabama Lifespan Respite (a partner with The United Way of Madison County) on the program's goal to expand high-quality respite services for caregivers statewide. The initiative offers reimbursement for respite, caregiver education and support sessions, and special events during National Family Caregivers Month.  News 19

SPORTS NEWS

  • Calhoun Community College's volleyball team clinched its first conference championship and will play in the NJCAA Gulf South District match tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Kelley Gymnasium on its Decatur campus. The team will compete for a spot in the national championship tournament in Cedar Rapids.  WAAY-TV
  • The Hartselle Tigers beat the Buckhorn Bucks 33—7 by not allowing any offensive touchdowns and advanced to the second round of the playoffs.  WAAY-TV
  • James Clemens' season ended when his Jets lost 31-21 to the Pirates in round one of the playoffs on November 7, marking an early exit for the team.  WAAY-TV
