  • Dozens of organizations and churches across North Alabama will give away free food and hot meals during the government shutdown. A list of dates and locations includes Decatur’s St. Andrews Church—109 Memorial Drive NW, which will serve 150 hot meals Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  WAAY-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Decatur City School Systems said Decatur High School was placed on heightened alert when an 11th-grade student fled after his backpack triggered the OpenGate weapons detector by containing a weapon component+ Decatur Police detained one individual for questioning, and authorities later lifted the alert at both Decatur High and Middle Schools.  WAAY-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Alabama had the highest electricity cost in the South with an average rate of 16.19 cents per kilowatt-hour recorded in August + some local utilities like Decatur Utilities charged as little as 11.40 cents per kilowatt-hour. Higher rates from Alabama Power at 17.02 cents per kilowatt-hour drove up the state average + studies confirm that all other southern states reported lower prices.  Rocket City Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Madison County Commission announced that beginning Monday the intersection of Jeff Road and McKee Road/Will Raby Road will be closed for about one week as utility crews relocate services ahead of a new roundabout construction. Motorists will follow detour routes along Jim McLemore Road, AL Highway 53, Old Railroad Bed Road, Toney Road, Pulaski Pike and Bo Howard Road — additional work may cause travel delays.  WAAY-TV
