  • Madison County Commission and Gentry-Isom VFW Post 2702 are launching Operation Greenlight—a project that asks homes and businesses to display green lights and yard signs from November 4 through Veterans Day—to honor veterans. County buildings will light up green next week and the VFW will hold a yard sign handout on November 6 at 6 p.m. at Floyd E. Tut Fann State Veterans Home.  WAAY-TV
  • More than six years after closing, Carrie Matthews Recreation Center will receive a $2.5 million restoration project—this work aims to update the facility for local use.  Decatur Daily
  • The Community Action Partnership of North Alabama announced plans to more than double the number of homeowners and renters it serves each year with a new Neighborhood Promise Training Center that will offer classes to improve housing skills.  Decatur Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The City of Athens announced that recycling will resume for residents on Monday, Oct 27. Decatur officials confirmed their facility is at full capacity—helping Athens restart its curbside service after a brief pause due to staffing cuts.  News 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal government shutdown has raised concerns as food banks and advocates warn that SNAP and WIC benefits will run out after October ends—leaving low-income residents uncertain about food assistance. The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama is preparing to help those in need while Alabama Arise advises benefit recipients to check the USDA website for updates on future funding.  News 19
