- ➤ Southeastern Grocers announced Tuesday that Winn-Dixie will close its last 20 stores in Alabama as it shifts focus to keeping 130 grocery stores and 140 liquor stores in Georgia and Florida—stores in Alabama will be sold. The chain served customers for nearly 100 years and has been a familiar part of our region. AL.com

- ➤ West Decatur Elementary School is reopening today after classes were canceled Thursday because smoke from a seized-up motor in its heating and air conditioning unit led to the closure—school officials ensured the building was safe for students. Decatur Daily

- ➤ Former University of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron announced his run for lieutenant governor on Thursday — he said he is leaving football behind to focus on family, faith, and conservative values. He joins a field of candidates that includes state officials and local leaders. News 19

- ➤ The Decatur City Council approved a $400 million plan to transform the historic Decatur Country Club into South Brook—a mixed-use neighborhood with housing, offices, retail and restaurants. Developer Land Innovations said phase one will break ground next spring and the entire project is expected to take 10 to 15 years. News 19

- ➤ Alabama A&M University's redshirt freshman quarterback Eric Handley is among 22 nominees on the 2025 Jerry Rice Award watch list—a recognition for the top freshman in FCS football; he played in seven games this season and will return to the field Saturday in the Magic City Classic against Alabama State.
