  • Winn-Dixie will close or transfer its Alabama stores as its parent shifts to a Florida-focused rebranding set for early 2026—only a few stores will remain outside Florida and southern Georgia. The move marks a major change after decades as a staple grocery chain in the South.  Rocket City Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dozens of artists— including a sculpture artist from Birmingham, a woodworker from Tennessee and a ceramicist from Georgia—will transform Decatur City Hall using wood, clay, glass, metal and oil, and thousands of visitors are expected to see the River Clay event. EDUCATION NEWS

  • West Decatur Elementary School is closed today — Decatur City Schools are working to clear heavy smoke and repair the HVAC system after a fire broke out yesterday afternoon around 5 p.m.  News 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • A spokesperson from the Alabama Department of Mental Health confirmed Wednesday that several group homes in Decatur are being decertified.  Decatur Daily
  • Alabama health officials reported 449 infant deaths last year and launched the #SafeSleepAL challenge during SIDS Awareness Month to teach safe crib practices. The campaign advises that removing blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals from cribs can lower the risk of Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths—steps aimed at keeping babies safe.  Rocket City Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, the Tennessee Valley high school football season kicks off with the FDFN game of the Week as Hartselle faces Muscle Shoals; FOX54 will air highlights and college football previews. The schedule for tomorrow includes many additional matchups for local teams.  Rocket City Now
  • Muscle Shoals and Hartselle meet Friday in a game that may decide the region—winners in past seasons have claimed the title. Muscle Shoals has dominated all season while Hartselle has won by large margins and both teams look to keep their unbeaten records.  WAAY-TV
