COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A free women's self-defense class will take place on Sunday at noon in Delano Park — Jiujitsu black belt Kiaya Jackson will lead the session and mats will be provided.  Decatur Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Tanner Elementary School toured their newly renovated building on Tuesday — the $2 million upgrade was proudly presented to their parents to showcase the improvements.  Decatur Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Less than a week remains until Tuesday's runoff election for the District 4 city council seat, and some local voters question candidate Sarah French’s eligibility after her 2001 felony conviction for marijuana possession—her campaign and attorney maintain she meets all legal requirements while officials have not reported any formal challenges. Voters will decide the matter in the upcoming runoff.  Rocket City Now
  • A judge scheduled a special election Tuesday to fill an open seat on the Morgan County school board—officials will set the election date soon.  Decatur Daily
  • The Decatur City Council passed an ordinance that will impose an excise tax on vaping products to preempt a state tax—officials may delay starting the collections pending further planning.  Decatur Daily

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Morgan County Health Department released inspection scores for food and lodging establishments inspected Sept. 8—13 with venues in Decatur and Somerville scoring between 84 and 100—critical items were noted at several sites.  WAAY-TV
  • The Alabama Department of Public Health Oral Health Office invites third graders statewide, including homeschooled children ages 8 to 10, to submit photos of their smiles for the contest running from September 22 through October 31—submissions are free and two winners, one boy and one girl, will be featured in marketing campaigns and recognized at a news conference on January 8. This contest promotes healthy oral habits ahead of National Children's Dental Health Month.  Rocket City Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • WAAY 31 will broadcast Big Game Friday Night on September 19 with high school football matchups from across North Alabama, including a game featuring Decatur Heritage. The game will begin at 10:15 p.m.—an expanded version of the event will air at 11 p.m.  WAAY-TV
  • The high school football season heats up across the Tennessee Valley as teams play several games starting 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19. In Decatur, Tharptown faces Decatur Heritage — a matchup that FOX54 will feature in its weekly broadcast.  Rocket City Now
