- ➤ Miranda Runion of TTL, Inc was named Commodore of the Month for September by the Greater Morgan County Builders Association. Chamber Commodores visited the Cook Museum of Natural Science on September 12 where Joy Smith shared plans to expand the museum—soon to become the North Alabama STEM Center—and discussed its educational programs. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Calhoun Community College held a ribbon cutting on September 15 for its 57,200 square foot Advanced Technology Center expansion that was funded by ASPIRE 2030 to help students learn skills for jobs in aerospace and manufacturing—local officials say the new labs and classrooms will boost workforce readiness in North Alabama. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Decatur City Council voted to add a tax of 10—cents per milliliter to vape products sold or delivered in the city starting October 1; part of the tax revenue will fund city services. The rule comes one year before the state’s vape tax takes effect on October 1. News 19
- ➤ Decatur Police Department has named Johnathan Bates as its new Public Information Officer—he began working with the department in February 2017 and has served as a patrol officer and trainer. In his new role, he will focus on clear public communication with the community. News 19
- ➤ A District 4 council runoff remains in Decatur's municipal elections set for next week as eligibility questions persist for the leading candidate—stemming from a past incident. Decatur Daily
- ➤ The Frazier-White site on Alabama 20 in Decatur received an $87,922 grant for a $153,710 site assessment study under the Alabama Site Evaluation and Economic Development Strategy — SEEDS. Decatur Daily
