ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Decatur Fire & Rescue said on Wednesday that a commercial vehicle fire closed the section of Somerville Road between Gordon and Prospect—citizens were urged to avoid the area as emergency crews worked on the scene.  News 19

CRIME NEWS

  • Ex-Decatur police officer Mac Bailey Marquette is accused of shooting Steve Perkins in his front yard during a car repossession last September and has asked the Alabama Supreme Court to drop the murder charge after the appeals court refused the change—his trial will begin on Nov. 17.  WAAY-TV
  • Brian Mann, a Decatur chiropractor, was sentenced to life in prison for the attempted murder of his wife after he allegedly tried to poison her with lead from a construction project—he was convicted by a Morgan County jury in June.  News 19
  • Decatur PD asked for help in identifying a man linked to a catalytic converter theft + anyone with clues was urged to call Detective Watson at 256-341-4644.  News 19
  • Former Decatur police officer Mac Marquette has filed an appeal with the Alabama Supreme Court to dismiss his murder charge after the Court of Criminal Appeals rejected his self-defense claim when he shot Stephen Perkins during a repossession attempt on Sept. 29 — his attorneys also asked for oral arguments and his trial is set for November 17.  News 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Decatur Mayor-Elect Kent Lawrence thanked supporters on Wednesday after winning Tuesday’s municipal election without a runoff—he beat Billy Jackson, Butch Matthews, and Suzie Wylie with 54% of the vote. The remaining provisional ballots will be counted at noon on Tuesday, September 2—confirming his victory ahead of his term as mayor.  News 19
  • Today, the Morgan County Rescue Squad is using new hand-held sonar devices—the AquaEye—and an underwater drone to speed up rescue and recovery efforts while reducing response times. The team will seek more grants soon to update its outdated drone and improve operations.  News 19
