ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An 18-wheeler overturned at the I-65 exit 340-B in Decatur on Tuesday morning — no injuries were reported and cleanup is underway.  News 19

CRIME NEWS

  • A Decatur man was arrested on Aug. 5th after tossing drugs while fleeing a traffic stop during a narcotics operation in Southwest Decatur — the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office said.  Decatur Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Data from the Alabama State Department of Education showed that 6,470 out of 55,930 third graders scored below grade level on the ACAP reading test for the 2024—2025 school year while 49,460 scored on or above grade level. In north Alabama, 659 out of 5,974 tested third graders scored below grade level.  News 19
  • Starting in September, high school students taking the ACT will face fewer questions, less test time, and shorter reading passages while the science and writing sections become optional—previous test scores and scales remain unchanged.  News 19
  • The school board approved a $500,000 plan to install AI-powered security systems in five high schools—these systems will scan up to 4,000 people an hour and detect guns, knives and other weapons, with installations set for the next 8 to 10 weeks. The new systems aim to help students feel safe at school.  WAAY-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Decatur Utilities received awards from the Alabama Water & Pollution Control Association for its water and wastewater treatment plants. The recognition highlights its ongoing commitment to safe water and environmental service in the area.  Decatur Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Decatur released polling locations for the municipal election on Tuesday, August 26, with voting hours from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Voters must check their designated location and note absentee ballot deadlines such as August 19 for mail applications and August 21 for in-person submissions — steps to make sure every vote is counted.  News 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Morgan County Health Department released food and lodging inspection scores for establishments inspected Aug. 11—16, based on a 100-point scale. One Decatur restaurant earned a perfect score—while other local spots had critical issues that were corrected.  WAAY-TV
