GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Decatur City Council approved a $190,900 contract to fix Carrie Matthews Recreation Center that has been closed for over five years—its gym floor, roof and walls need repair. Councilman Billy Jackson said work such as a foam lift of the gym floor and soil replacement will start soon to restore this community landmark. WAAY-TV
- ➤ Two city council candidates received notable endorsements Monday as Decatur prepares for municipal elections in eight days. In District 1, Terrance Adkins was backed by Catrela Perkins—the widow of a man fatally shot in 2023—while in District 3, Council President Jacob Ladner supported incumbent Carlton McMasters amid concerns over his opponent's campaign tactics. - ➤ Decatur City Council voted 4–1 to fund renovations for Carrie Matthews Recreation Center — a 57-year-old facility closed in 2019 after its gym floor began sinking — and to address foundation issues noted since 2015. The council also relocated its 2024 polling site to St. James Cumberland Presbyterian Church at 920 Moulton Street West — a decision announced last Friday — to better serve voters. News 19
