CRIME NEWS

  • The family of teen Jaiden DeJarnett—who died in a 2023 high-speed chase with Decatur police—has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city, Mayor Tab Bowling and two officers, saying the police did not follow their rules and broke his constitutional rights.  WAAY-TV
  • A Falkville woman charged with fentanyl trafficking will face a bond hearing on August 26 after she tried to swallow a baggie of fentanyl during a traffic stop + authorities continue to review her case.  Decatur Daily
  • The family of 16-year-old Jaiden Rashad DeJarnett, who died in a high-speed chase on Sept. 4th, 2023, is suing city leaders and officers including former officer Mac Bailey Marquette, Mayor Tab Bowling, former chief Todd Pinion and Lt. Joe Renshaw—claiming the chase violated police protocols by continuing after the teen drove without headlights and taillights at speeds over 135 mph for more than 40 minutes and seeking damages for wrongful death, loss of companionship and emotional distress.  WAAY-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs is asking the North Alabama community to help find land for a new state veterans cemetery to honor local service members. The agency is seeking flat farmland (about 110 acres) with low noise so it can start building in planned 10 phases to serve 40,000 to 50,000 veterans.  WAAY-TV
