  • Two McDonald’s hosted backpack giveaways on Tuesday in Decatur. The location at 225 Danville Road SW started at 10 a.m. and the one at 1208 6th Ave SE began at 4 p.m.—each gave away 200 backpacks while supplies lasted.  News 19

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Foley woman, 29-year-old Brittany M. Reed, died on Monday when her 1999 Toyota Corolla left the roadway and struck a tree on Gum Pond Road near Martin Road in Morgan County as she was not wearing a seat belt.  WAAY-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Calhoun Community College is offering a new social work degree program to help meet Alabama’s growing need for social workers. The program includes a two-year Associate of Applied Science in Social Work Technology for immediate work entry—students gain hands-on experience—and an Associate of Science option for those planning to transfer to a four-year university.  News 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Morgan County Health Department released inspection scores from July 28 to August 2 for food and lodging places in Decatur and Hartselle. Scores ranged from 83 to 100 with two sites earning perfect marks—others posted critical violations including unhygienic practices and improper food temperatures.  WAAY-TV
  • North Alabama doctors say kids need a strong breakfast loaded with brain food like eggs, oatmeal, and yogurt—this meal helps them do well in school, and they advise serving colorful, filling lunches along with plenty of water and sleep.
