GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Alabama Arise celebrated Gov. Kay Ivey signing bill HB 386 on Aug 1 at the Capitol, which will lower the state sales tax on groceries from 3% to 2% starting Sept 1—local governments can also reduce their own grocery taxes. The new law builds on a 2023 reduction that cut the tax from 4% to 3% and is aimed at easing the burden of high food prices. News 19
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ From July 21 to 25, 2025, the Limestone County Health Department released inspection scores for food and lodging establishments in Athens, with scores ranging from 90 to 100 and one facility earning a perfect score. Several establishments with critical violations — including a live roach issue and improper temperature control — were corrected during follow-up visits set for July 28. WAAY-TV
