ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A crash involving one vehicle occurred at 8:27 a.m. Tuesday on northbound U.S. 31 near I-65 in Morgan County and closed the roadway for an unknown time—troopers are investigating and urging drivers to take alternate routes. WAAY-TV
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Attorneys for former Decatur Police Officer Mac Marquette filed a 43-page reply on July 22 to counter the Alabama Attorney General’s claim that he should not be granted immunity for his Sept. 29 shooting of Stephen Perkins—arguing that he acted in self-defense and that the state failed to disprove his stand-your-ground and common law defenses while his murder trial remains set for September. - ➤ The Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce hosted a welcome breakfast on July 29 at the Cook Museum of Natural Science for 125 new teachers joining the Decatur City School System. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Decatur Utilities is advising residents to beat the heat and lower energy bills by setting air conditioners between 75 and 78 degrees and waiting until after 8 p.m. to run heat-producing appliances, as heat indexes will reach 100 to 110 degrees in parts of the area — they also recommend closing blinds and switching to LED bulbs to reduce indoor heat. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Morgan County Health Department released inspection scores for local food and lodging establishments inspected July 21-26, with scores based on a 100-point scale and one restaurant earning a perfect score.
