ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Three children and one adult were taken to the hospital Saturday night after a golf cart and vehicle wreck at 9:02 p.m. near the 3500 block of W Chapel Hill Road—Decatur police said one child was airlifted to UAB while an adult and two additional children were transported by ambulance to Huntsville as the investigation continues.  WAAY-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Decatur and Huntsville police say car break-ins are rising this summer because many drivers leave their cars unlocked, with Huntsville reporting 18 break-ins last week and Decatur officers noting 20-25 break-ins each month (95% of the cars were not locked) so residents should secure their vehicles and remove valuables.  WAAY-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On July 21, AAA reported that in Decatur regular gasoline cost $2.74, mid-grade $3.20 and premium $3.54—prices below the national averages of $3.14, $3.61 and $3.97. Prices in nearby cities like Huntsville and Florence-Muscle Shoals are similar and AAA advises drivers to slow down and reduce idling to save fuel.  Rocket City Now
  • Families in Tennessee Valley will shop during a three-day tax-free weekend on school supplies and clothing as major stores like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy will offer nearly 10 percent savings by removing state sales tax from qualifying items (customers should verify price limits) and local business owners expect the event to boost sales.  Rocket City Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Calhoun Community College announced on July 21 that it named Cam Chafetz as its new head baseball coach and Denton Bowling as its new head softball coach. Chafetz comes from the University of West Alabama (where he helped win the Gulf South Conference Championship) and Bowling brings a record of 242 to 132 at Hatton High School (including two state championships).  News 19

  • Decatur Police Chief Torry Mack began leadership training on Monday to boost officer skills after recent criticisms of the department—aiming to improve police communication and public interactions. National communications expert Darryl Rivers led the four-day session to instill leadership qualities in officers aspiring to higher ranks.  News 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Morgan County Health Department released food and lodging inspection scores from establishments inspected between July 14th and 17th, 2025. Several Decatur restaurants received scores below 85 — with noted issues like excessive flies and improper sanitizer levels—while others scored as high as 99.  WAAY-TV
  • Today, the Alabama Department of Public Health warns that rising heat and humidity are increasing the risk of heat cramps, exhaustion, and stroke. They advise residents to drink water, wear loose light-colored clothes, and avoid heavy outdoor work during the hottest parts of the day — especially important for children and older adults.  Rocket City Now

  • North Alabama football legend Philip Rivers, a Decatur native who played for the Chargers from 2004 to 2019 and for the Colts in 2020, announced his retirement via a video posted by the Chargers on July 21st.
