  • Today, North Alabama offers a range of free community events on May 31 including cultural celebrations, auto shows, water games and outdoor markets across the region. In Decatur, the Once Upon a Saturday event gives local residents face painting, food trucks, vendors and character appearances from 5 to 7 p.m. today — adding a festive touch to the weekend.  Rocket City Now

CRIME NEWS

  • A man from Decatur was arrested on February 12 in Priceville for trafficking dangerous drugs after police found methamphetamine with fentanyl in his vehicle — his past burglary and drug trafficking charges led a Morgan County Circuit Judge to sentence him to 20 years and a day on May 29.  News 19
  • Marquise Antwan Wayns, 22, of Hillsboro was sentenced to 22 years for the alleged attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend on January 10, 2023 — officers said he poured gasoline on her before setting her on fire, causing severe burns on her face and torso.  News 19
  • Morgan County Sheriff and Huntsville Police are investigating a possible body near the northbound side of Hwy. 231 Bridge north of Lacey's Spring — officials urge caution and warn that delays are likely.  WAAY-TV
  • Morgan County residents lost over $1M to scam calls—one victim lost $813,000 between January and May, another lost $15,000, and a third lost $200,000 after being told to transfer funds to a bitcoin machine, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office warned against sending money over the phone.  News 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ALDOT will close Upper River Road Overpass on June 6 for repairs and to raise the structure — traffic will be rerouted on Bethel Road to Highway 67, and officials expect the project to finish before school starts in August.  News 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • Decatur Morgan Hospital announced on May 30th that its central-line-associated bloodstream infection rate was zero, based on data from the CDC National Healthcare Safety Network. Hospital President Kelli Powers credited the achievement to strict infection prevention protocols and the dedication of clinical teams.  News 19
