  • A Decatur man accused of strangling his girlfriend in front of her young daughter—according to court records—appeared in Morgan County District Court this week while attorneys questioned a detective about the alleged incident.  Decatur Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cody Bowers has been named the Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce’s SuperStar Teacher for May at Danville Middle School—he received a $150 gift card for his classroom, a $50 gift card for personal use and a $1,000 grant for the school from the Chamber’s One Vision Foundation and its sponsors.  Decatur Chamber of Commerce
  • Calhoun Community College will open its new STEAM Imagination Center in downtown Decatur, housed in the renovated Eyster Key building—offering training in science, technology, engineering, arts and math. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, May 20 at 10 a.m.  WAAY-TV
  • Drake State grads are starting careers and apprenticeships in high-demand trades such as welding, nursing and maintenance tech jobs. Director of Workforce Development Ira Jones said the program—once neglected—now helps meet local job needs in the Tennessee valley.  WAAY-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • On May 15, Hartselle High School claimed its 10th AHSAA State Baseball Championship at Jacksonville State University’s Jim Case Stadium by beating Chelsea 9-3 in a best-of-three series. The Tigers rallied with a seven-run burst in the top of the seventh inning, overturning a 1-0 deficit from game one — a win that coach Brad Phillips said would have made former coach William Booth proud.  Rocket City Now
