CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Defense attorneys filed an unopposed motion to delay the trial of former Decatur police officer Mac Marquette, who is charged with murdering Steve Perkins on Sept. 29, seeking time to appeal a March ruling that denied him immunity—so the trial set for June 9 will likely be postponed. - ➤ Attorneys for former Decatur police officer Mac Marquette asked a Morgan County judge to delay his murder trial, where he is charged with killing 39-year-old Perkins during a vehicle repossession in September 2023, and said the state does not oppose the postponement as his team faces scheduling conflicts and plans to appeal a self-defense ruling. - ➤ On Apr 11th, Decatur Police arrested 49-year-old Martie Tavares Reed during a drug investigation after a vehicle stop near Lindo Avenue SW & Tower view Street SW led to a search of his secondary home where officers found cocaine, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia; Reed was taken to Morgan County Jail on a $2,300 bond and will be handed over to the U.S. Marshall Service when released. - ➤ The Alabama Senate unanimously approved SB 305 on Thursday, creating the RAISE fund that will change K-12 school funding by giving extra weight to special needs—covering poverty, special education, and English language learners—and shifting $375 million from the Educational Opportunities Reserve Fund to support the program’s first three years. Sen. Arthur Orr from Decatur said the bill now moves to the House for further review. Rocket City Now

- ➤ Cleanup is underway along the 500 block of 5th Avenue Southwest after a storm caused straight-line winds to knock a tree onto a duplex, damaging the home but leaving the two occupants safe.
