COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Decatur will host the Alabama Center for the Arts Jazz Festival on Saturday, Apr. 11 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The free event features live music, free workshops, food such as crawfish boil & a finale concert at The Brick at 7 p.m.  WAAY-TV
  • The Chamber held leadership programs from January to March featuring a GE Appliances tour and sessions at the Entrepreneurial Center and Calhoun Community College. Leaders & students met with local government and industry to boost career skills and plan community projects, including a Montgomery trip, sponsored by Nucor Steel Decatur.  Decatur Chamber of Commerce
  • The Madison County Sheriff’s Office will host a charity golf classic on Thursday, Aug. 20 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail (Hampton Cove in Huntsville) to raise funds for Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranches. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. with a tee time at 10:00 a.m.  Rocket City Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On April 6, AAA reported Decatur drivers paid $3.84 for regular gas, under the national average of $4.12, with similar rates in Huntsville and Florence-Muscle Shoals. AAA advised drivers to save fuel by slowing down and accelerating gently (fuel-saving tips).  Rocket City Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Oak, cedar and pine trees produce high pollen levels in North Alabama this spring, causing allergy symptoms for many residents. Local experts advise checking pollen counts (especially in the early morning) and closing windows to reduce exposure.  Rocket City Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Decatur City Council approved roughly $370k on Monday night to fund the Victorious Reentry Program (from opioid settlement funds) that helps formerly incarcerated men rebuild their lives. The funding will cover rent, outreach and transportation over the next three years.  Rocket City Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Rocket City Trash Panda George Klassen made his MLB debut for the Angels on Sunday at Angel Stadium—he pitched 2.2 innings while allowing two runs, marking him as the 48th Trash Panda to reach the majors.  Rocket City Now
