  • Mud Tavern Volunteer Fire — Rescue will host a free Stop the Bleed class on April 29th from 6:30 p.m.—8:30 p.m. The class offers hands-on training in life-saving skills—RSVP is required as spots are limited to 20 participants.  News 19

CRIME NEWS

  • Ex-Decatur Police officer Bailey Mac Marquette will go on trial at 9 a.m. June 9 for the murder of Steve Perkins during a 2023 car repossession in his front yard— a judge ruled he is not immune from prosecution.  WAAY-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alabama drivers are reminded to turn on headlights when windshield wipers are in use during rain to help other drivers see them better. Those who do not follow the law risk getting fined.  Rocket City Now
  • Governor Kay Ivey urged Alabama families today to apply for the CHOOSE Act — a program offering education savings accounts that provide up to $7,000 per eligible public school student and up to $2,000 per home education student — with applications closing at midnight April 7. Families will learn their funding status in May and will be able to use the funds in July.  Rocket City Now
  • The City of Decatur closed Oak Street NE from Cherry Street to Vine Street for tree work and the road reopened around 2:30 p.m. Monday.  News 19
  • The Colbert County Health Department released the latest food and lodging inspection scores for establishments inspected in February and March using a 100-point scale to measure compliance with food safety rules. The report covers local businesses in Tuscumbia, Muscle Shoals and Sheffield & cites examples such as 247 Food Mart scoring 97 and Touch Of Love Development Center scoring 98.  WAAY-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Decatur Morgan Hospital blessed a new Safe Haven Baby Box Monday morning, marking it as the second medical center with one—this box near the emergency room alerts staff within 60 seconds for prompt newborn care. Hospital officials say this setup removes delays by eliminating the need for extra transport from fire stations.  WAAY-TV
  • Many in the Tennessee Valley now suffer from seasonal allergies as pollen from trees, grasses and weeds causes watery eyes, sneezing and itchiness — relief is not expected until early summer.  Rocket City Now
  • The Morgan County Health Department released food and lodging inspection scores for local Decatur establishments from March 24-29. The scores ranged from below 85 to the high 90s and showed critical violations — including raw chicken stored with raw shrimp and mold issues.  WAAY-TV
