COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Decatur Youth Services hired an architect to lead design for a new youth facility. The project remains in early planning and more details will be shared soon.  Decatur Daily
  • The Carnegie Carnival raised $232,000 Saturday for local groups including the Carnegie Visual Arts Center, CASA of North Alabama + Decatur Animal Services, contributing to nearly $2 million total raised since 2012.  Decatur Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nine teens will be honored at a Youth of the Year luncheon tomorrow, Feb. 18, by the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Alabama. The event will recognize outstanding leadership, academic success, and community service, and a finalist will receive the Johnston Family Scholarship (a mark of high achievement).  WAAY-TV
  • Technical schools, community colleges and healthcare providers across Alabama are expanding nursing programs to help ease shortages following nearly 40,000 nurses leaving in recent years. Calhoun Community College is adding beds + simulation programs at its Huntsville campus, with more opportunities planned statewide.  Rocket City Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Toyota Field in Madison is vying for top honors in USA TODAY's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards as fans cast daily votes until Monday, Mar. 16 and winners will be announced on Wednesday, Mar. 25.  Rocket City Now
  • North Alabama ended its losing skid with an overtime win (84-78) over Eastern Kentucky as Donte Bacchus scored 21 points and Kevin de Kovachich added five of his 18 in extra time.  Rocket City Now
  • The Lady Bulldogs avenged their only SWAC loss this season by defeating MVSU, 95-55, and the Bulldogs won 72-65 — with Kintavious Dozier scoring 18 points. Both wins boost local team pride ahead of upcoming conference games.  Rocket City Now
