CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Local news celebrates Black History Month (a time to honor local heroes) by sharing stories of figures like firefighter Joe Louis Duster and the legacy of Huntsville's first Black school. The initiative highlights Alabamians who shaped history and are building our future. WAAY-TV
- ➤ A local consultant has been hired to survey the historic Pennyacres neighborhood near Walter Jackson Elementary School in Southeast Decatur. The study (focusing on aging homes) will document the area's architectural features and cultural significance for future preservation. Decatur Daily
- ➤ Communities across the Tennessee Valley will celebrate Black History Month this February with events including choral concerts, art festivals, and film series. - ➤ The Rocket City Trash Pandas have launched Trash Pandas Rookies — a youth scholarship program for local baseball and softball players ages 7 to 12 in North Alabama. Applications are due by Feb. 28 for families living within 60 miles of TOYOTA Field. Rocket City Now
- ➤ North Alabama high school student-athletes made their college commitments on Wednesday, and Decatur’s Harris Penley joined others heading to Keiser University. The athletes from local schools selected programs in football, soccer, cross country and golf. WAAY-TV
