  • Farmers are preparing their strawberry plants as bitter cold and wind chills below zero are forecast for the weekend. They will use protective measures in local fields to defeat the frigid conditions.  Decatur Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials in Decatur are testing new batteries today to repair five nonfunctional tornado sirens, and they will take further action if the inexpensive fix does not work.  Decatur Daily
  • Decatur Utilities crews are repairing a water main leak at the intersection of Eighth Street and 20th Avenue Southeast, as announced Thursday evening.  Decatur Daily

HEALTH NEWS

  • Huntsville Hospital signed a $450 million deal to acquire Crestwood Medical Center and said that operations & pay will stay the same, though some local leaders worry that fewer healthcare choices may hurt the community; federal regulators will review the acquisition.  Rocket City Now
  • Alabama ranked among the four worst states by receiving F scores in all tobacco control categories, including prevention funding, smoke-free laws, and cessation services, according to the American Lung Association report. The marks point to a need for stronger policies to reduce smoking-related deaths.  Rocket City Now
  • FDA officials link Live It Up + Why Not Natural superfood supplements to a salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 65 people in 28 states, including 1 to 2 cases in Alabama. Consumers with products expiring from Aug. 2026 to Jan. 2028 are urged to discard them.  Rocket City Now
