  • Bethel Cumberland Presbyterian Church will host Soup for the Soul Day on Sunday from 11:15 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. and will serve hot soup at the church while volunteers go out to help the homeless.  WAAY-TV

  • Verizon said it will give customers a $20 credit through the myVerizon app after a day-long service outage on Tuesday ended at 9:15 p.m. CT, and business clients will be contacted directly.  Rocket City Now
  • The NAFECO Expo draws hundreds to a Decatur venue and spotlights a growing focus on electric-vehicle fire safety. NAFECO vice president Ronald Woodall said the company built a customer base across 15 states (serving fire, police departments and industrial plants) over the past 15 years.  Decatur Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Daniel Gullion, principal of Priceville Elementary School, is running for Morgan County Schools superintendent—challenging incumbent Tracie Turrentine in the upcoming election.  Decatur Daily
  • Decatur native Wendy Lang has been named the executive director of the Alabama Education Retirees Association (AERA). She will lead the group in advancing retirement support for educators.  Decatur Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A House committee unanimously passed a bill to permanently fund Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library while requiring the state to split costs with local partners. The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Terri Collins (Decatur), codifies Gov. Kay Ivey’s 2023 statewide expansion of the program.  Rocket City Now
  • An Alabama Senate committee approved a bill on Wednesday morning that requires insurance to cover prostate cancer screenings for high-risk men over 50 and men over 40 with a family history. The measure now heads to the Senate to remove cost-sharing barriers for early detection.  Rocket City Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kevin & Jefferson Lopez from Decatur have been boxing at Decatur Youth Services for three years and now prepare to enter a regional competition. They began training to stay active and have turned the sport into a path toward success while overcoming challenges.  WAAY-TV
